How to Prepare for an Alaska Rail and Sail Journey with Amtrak Vacations
The views in Alaska may be what first catches your eye, but the journey offers more than scenery from a train window. An Alaska rail and sail holiday can take you from the comfort of a train to a cruise along the coast, then inland aboard the Alaska Railroad towards Denali.
With trains, cruises, hotels, and sightseeing woven into one trip, a little preparation helps you enjoy each part. Here's what to check in your itinerary, what to pack, and how to get ready for the connections along the way.
Start with the route on your confirmed itinerary. An Alaska rail and sail holiday can include an Amtrak train journey, a cruise, and travel aboard the Alaska Railroad. Check the accommodation, sightseeing, transfers, and documents for each segment before departure. Pack for the full land and sea journey, with a small bag for items you’ll need along the way.
The key to preparing is recognising that each part of the holiday works differently. Your train ride to the cruise departure city, time aboard the ship, and rail journey through Alaska may each have distinct boarding instructions and luggage requirements. Reading your plans in travel order makes those details easier to manage.
Which parts of the journey are by train?
On the Alaska Rail and Sail with Denali National Park itinerary, the Alaska Railroad takes you into the state’s interior after the cruise. The itinerary from Chicago also includes Amtrak travel before the cruise.
| Part of your holiday | Details to check |
|---|---|
| Amtrak journey, if included | Boarding details, booked seat or sleeping accommodation, and luggage options |
| Cruise | Embarkation instructions and required documents |
| Alaska Railroad | Rail segments and booked class |
| Hotels and sightseeing | Addresses, meeting points, and included activities |
| Connections | Transfers listed in your confirmed itinerary |
Amtrak and the Alaska Railroad are different train services. If your holiday includes both, use the information for each segment when preparing, including each train's onboard experience and luggage rules.
What should you review before departure?
Read your itinerary from your first travel day through to your destination. Note where you’ll spend each night, when you’ll change modes of travel, and what happens between disembarking the cruise and boarding the next train.
A pre-departure review should answer these questions:
- Are the starting and ending cities correct?
- Which train segments and accommodation are booked?
- Where and when do you board and leave the cruise?
- Which sightseeing experiences are included?
- Which transfers appear in the confirmation?
- Is there enough free time for anything else you’d like to do?
Extra hotel nights and sightseeing can be added to many itineraries. If you’d like to adjust the pace or include another experience, discuss the available options before departure.
What should you pack for train, cruise, and land travel?
Pack for the destinations and activities on your itinerary, then check the forecast shortly before you leave. It's a good idea to include multiple layers and have luggage you can comfortably manage between trains and hotels.
Keep these essentials in a small bag you can access during travel:
- Identification and travel documents
- Medication and personal care items
- Your phone, camera, chargers, and a portable power bank
- Comfortable layers for the day’s activities
- A refillable water bottle and permitted snacks
- Headphones, a book, or downloaded entertainment
Check the luggage requirements for every operator on your itinerary, including both Amtrak and Alaska Railroad, and the cruise operator.
How should you prepare for an overnight Amtrak ride?
If your holiday starts with overnight travel aboard Amtrak, pack a separate train bag. Include medication, valuables, personal care items, and a change of clothes, so you won’t need to open your larger suitcase during the ride.
Check whether your booked accommodation is in standard class or a private sleeping room. The accommodation and meal arrangements differ, and your confirmation shows what applies to your journey.
When will your travel documents arrive?
Travel documents are normally emailed 14 to 21 days before departure after full payment. If you book within 21 days of travel, they may arrive closer to your departure date. Check names, dates, accommodation, tickets or vouchers, and instructions as soon as you receive them.
Keep the documents accessible throughout the trip. Check identification and any passport or entry requirements for your route, particularly if it includes travel through Canada. If a detail is unclear or differs from your booking, resolve it before departure.
