Maximum Flexibility

With Maximum Flexibility, we give travellers who book new reservations through 31 March 2021, the option to change their travel dates or cancel their rail holiday up to 5 days prior to departure without incurring any change or cancellation fees. Any existing reservations can be rescheduled up to 5 days prior to departure without incurring any change or cancellation fees.

If customers choose to cancel, they will be issued a future travel credit, which is valid for 24 months and can be used toward a new reservation with any of our brands, destinations, and itineraries for any travel date and length of trip without penalty*.

*Additional restrictions may apply for any rail vacation that includes a cruise component.

What steps are being taken to ensure safe social distancing?

We want to keep you informed about the measures Amtrak is taking to help protect our customers and their employees, including:

• New Facial Covering Policy. For your safety and the safety of our employees, Amtrak is now requiring all customers to wear a facial covering over their nose and mouth. Amtrak customer-facing employees are also required to wear facial coverings. The CDC recommends the use of facial coverings to slow the spread of the virus and prevent transmission.

• Physical Distancing. To maintain CDC recommendations for physical distancing on board our trains, we are limiting bookings to 50% capacity. In addition, signage has been added in our stations to help travellers maintain safe distances in highly trafficked areas. We have also installed transparent protective barriers at many station ticket counters across our network.

• Enhanced Cleaning Protocols. We have increased the frequency of cleaning services on board trains and at our stations. In addition to steam cleaning the carpets, the trains are sanitized with misting machines daily before entering service.

• Cashless Service. For the safety of our customers and employees, we are temporarily accepting cashless payments only, in stations and on trains.

What flexibility do we have when travelling with Amtrak Vacations?

The safety and security of our guests is our top priority. Given the current AU and foreign government national emergencies and circumstances beyond our control we have revised our terms and conditions. Customers booking travel during this period will receive maximum flexibility to travel to any destination, on any date, or length of trip with the option to reschedule or cancel their trip up to 5 days prior to departure without any change or cancellation fees.

How far in advance can I book my Amtrak Vacations holiday?

With Amtrak Vacations, most of our holidays can be booked up to 24 months in advance.  To make a booking, please call Amtrak Vacations at 1300 650 257.

How do I make a reservation?

We offer three (3) ways to book a vacation package with Amtrak Vacations:

– Call Amtrak Vacations and speak with a Rail Vacation Specialist.

– Book online at Navigate to the vacation package page you wish to book, click on the pricing tab, select your travel dates and enter your contact details.

– Visit or call your local travel agent.

Do you offer itineraries for solo travellers?

Absolutely! Our pricing on our website is based on double occupancy, for individual traveller pricing, please give us a call and one of our rail experts can assist you!

Can I begin or end at my local Amtrak station with any Amtrak Vacation?

Yes, absolutely. You can begin or end your vacation at any of the over 500 Amtrak Stations.

Is sightseeing included in the Amtrak Vacations packages?

Yes, sightseeing is included on all our vacation packages. Details are listed within the vacation package page, on the Package Details and Itinerary tabs.

What is the difference between the rail vacation types you offer?

There are 3 different rail vacation types to choose from:

Independent Rail Journeys – Soak in the magical scenery of North America from the comfort and luxury of Amtrak. While all the planning is done for you – hotel accommodations, sightseeing attractions, activities, dining and more – you set your own schedule on these adventures.

Rail Experiences – Take in picturesque landscapes as you relax onboard iconic Amtrak routes and discover the beauty and excitement of North America.

Rail and Sail Vacations – Explore North America by land and sea on a Rail and Sail Vacation. Travel in comfort and luxury via Amtrak to explore popular cities like Seattle, New Orleans, New York City and Miami before cruising along the glacial wonders of Alaska or the relaxing shores of the Caribbean.

Can I add on additional sightseeing activities and/or additional hotel nights to one of your rail vacation packages?

Yes, you can add additional sightseeing activities and/or hotel nights to most existing rail vacation packages we offer. There are a couple ways to do this.

– On the website: You are be able to view the Amtrak rooming upgrade options, hotel upgrade options and additional sightseeing options through the online booking process. Details of the upgrades and price increases are listed next to each item. Additional charges may apply.

– When you speak with a Rail Vacation Specialist: request an explanation of the upgrade options to your vacation package as you wish. Additional charges may apply.

Can I take a specific Rail Vacation that you offer in reverse order?

Yes! On most of our vacation packages we also offer a reverse version. Please call and speak with one of our Rail Vacation Specialists for reverse options.

What are the sleeper accommodations on the train like?

Amtrak trains traveling on long-distance routes typically use either two-level Superliner or one-level Viewliner trains. Both types of trains include bedrooms arranged in various configurations as well as private and public bathrooms and showers. Both Roomette and Bedroom’s provide sleeping accommodations.

A Roomette is designed for one or two passengers, with comfortable reclining seats on either side of a sweeping picture window. At night, the seats convert to a bed and an upper berth is lowered down from the ceiling. There are several sinks, toilets and showers shared between yourself and the other passengers booking Roomettes aboard the train.

A Bedroom is ideal for two passengers. The bedroom offers a private, self-enclosed toilet and shower in the cabin. Like the Roomette, the Bedroom offers comfortable reclining seats on either side of a panoramic picture window. At night, the seats convert to a bed, and an upper berth with its own picture window folds out from the upper wall.

Are meals included with my sleeping accommodations or any other perks?

Yes, all meals on-board the train are included with the purchase of sleeping accommodations aboard the train as well as several other perks including: A picture window, showers and toilets, electrical outlets, climate control, individual reading lights, garment rack, fold down table, fresh towels and bed linens, personal service (turn-down, coffee, make-up bed) and bottled water.

Can I fly to the first city then pick up my rail vacation package and then fly home from a different city?

Yes, absolutely! You can take the Amtrak train one way and then fly home from a different city. This is very popular with our Independent Rail Vacations and our Rail and Sail Vacation packages.

Is travel protection available if I have to cancel?

Yes, travel protection is something that we offer and strongly suggest for all travelers. Our Travel Protection Option allows you to cancel your Amtrak Vacations agreements for any reason up until the day of your departure. You will receive a full value refund minus the Trip Protections cost in the form of cash and a future travel voucher that can be used on any Amtrak Vacations trip booked within one year of the date of cancellation.

Can you accommodate special dietary needs?

We can provide special menu selections on most trains with 72-hour advance notice. We require 24-hour advance notice for Acela Express First Class service. You do not need to provide advance notice for vegetarian meals.

How long before the train departs should I be at the station?

The recommended arrival time for each station varies, but plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled departure. If you need help with baggage, tickets or any other services, or if you are departing from a large or busy station, we recommend you arrive at the station even earlier. To confirm your train will be arriving on time, please call 1-800-USA-RAIL.

Is there food on the train?

Yes, most trains offer one or more dining options ranging from casual dining to full sit-down meals. Roomette and Bedroom accommodations INCLUDE all meals on the trains (gratuities are not included).

How much luggage can I bring?

In general, each passenger is allowed two (2) carry-on bags, each not to exceed 50 lbs. (23 kg), 28 x 22 x 14 inches (700 x 550 x 350 millimeters), free of charge.

Additionally, each passenger can check up to 4 bags – 2 free of charge and 2 for $20 per bag, each not to exceed 50 lbs. (23 kg), 75 linear inches (length + width + height) if the origin and destination stations offer checked baggage service.

Where are your hotels located?

All of our hotels are centrally located within each city we visit. Most are within a short distance of the Amtrak station and local sights.

Are transfers to and from the port included on Rail & Sail programs?

Yes. On all Rail and Sail programs, you will have included transfers to the port from your hotel and then from the port to either a local hotel, the Amtrak station or the airport (based upon your itinerary).

On your Independent Rail Journeys, Rail & Sail Vacations, and Rail Getaways, where do we go for our included sightseeing?

In your travel documents you will have vouchers for all of your services, including any sightseeing within the package. Your vouchers will list in detail where to redeem the voucher for services.

When will I receive my travel documents?

After we receive full payment, travel documents will be mailed to you approximately 21 days prior to your departure.

If I am traveling from overseas to the U.S. how do I book an Amtrak Vacations package?

If you are traveling from overseas, you are able to book your Amtrak Vacations package by either calling us or by emailing us at [email protected].

To ensure adequate bandwidth for all riders to enjoy this amenity, AmtrakConnects supports only general web browsing activity and discourages engaging in web activities that use large amounts of bandwidth such as streaming music, streaming video or downloading large files. To prepare for these slight restrictions, we advise downloading necessary large files prior to boarding the train.
